Amazon is closing its online learning academy in India and this is the reason behind it
Amazon India announced that it would close its online learning platform for high-school students in the country beginning in August 2023, less than two years after its launch. Amazon Academy was launched in January of last year to assist students in preparing for the JEE.
The eCommerce behemoth also stated that those enrolled in the current academic session will receive a full refund. During the coronavirus pandemic, there was a surge in virtual learning, so the platform was launched. Amazon Academy provided preparation for competitive exams such as JEE, which allows admission to top engineering colleges across India. According to an assessment, the world’s largest online retailer has decided to discontinue Amazon Academy “in a phased manner to take care of current customers. However, the company stated that customers will have access to full course material online for an additional year, until October 2024.
The online preparation offering will provide students with in-depth knowledge and practice routines required for the JEE, through the curated learning material, live lectures, and comprehensive assessments in Math, Physics, and Chemistry, the company stated at the time of its launch. In addition, the company worked with the education group Sri Chaitanya to launch full-syllabus courses for Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) candidates. The shutdown comes as multiple edtech companies are under pressure with schools and coaching centers reopening across India following coronavirus-induced lockdowns. Byju announced in October that it would lay off 2,500 employees as it strives to become profitable. Unacademy, Toppr, WhiteHat Jr, and Vedantu were among the other companies that announced layoffs earlier this year.
